Apple is starting to offer free 4K upgrades for purchased TV shows

Still in 2017 Apple has started selling 4K content in the iTunes Store, along with the launch of the first Apple TV 4K. At that time, Apple also began to upgrade previously purchased movies to 4K quality at no additional cost.

Now Apple is finally extending this to TV shows, and has started offering free 4K upgrades on select titles in the Apple TV app.

Apple TV upgrades to 4K for free with show purchases

Our friend Zygmund Hakim, who wrote in a last week, saw this post on social media:

Free 4K upgrades on @AppleTV have been a long-standing and long-awaited promise for customers buying movies on Apple’s digital storefront.

Starting this week, Apple quietly began expanding its offer of free 4K upscaling to select TV shows.

The improvements are in the early stages of implementation, but Sigmund has compiled a complete list for you. You can see it in Threads. Among the titles upscaled to 4K at no extra cost to users:

  • Mad Men
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
  • RuPaul’s Drag Race UK
  • Q: To the storm
  • The Twilight Zone (Reboot)
  • Hunter wives
  • Shanghai is blooming
  • Alaska Ice Airport
  • The Wingfeather Saga
  • After taste

This means that if you’ve purchased any of these shows through the iTunes Store/Apple TV app, they’re now available to watch in 4K for no extra charge. We expect this list to continue to grow over time.

Have you seen any of your TV shows upscaled to 4K on your Apple Account? Let us know in the comments.
