Apple Business and Apple School Manager are the basis for deploying modern Apple devices. If you deploy Macs, iPads, or iPhones in your enterprise, you spend a lot of time on these portals. The problem is that the web interface can be incredibly tedious when dealing with thousands of devices. As we’ve mentioned several times, Apple introduced an official API last year that opens the door to automation and new tools for these services. A new native macOS program is called ASBMUtil is one such example.

Bringing the API to the desktop
Rod Christiansen recently Apple launched ASBMUtil, a native SwiftUI interface built to interact with your enterprise tools. Instead of struggling with JSON and terminal commands, Mac admins can now interact directly with the Apple Business API through a native app on their Mac.
The main view is a single local table of every managed device in your Apple Business and School Manager account. Macs, iPads, iPhones, and Apple TVs are all displayed side by side. If you click a row, the sidebar scrolls through full device details, including serial number, order status, device management task, AppleCare coverage, and MAC address. You can easily select multiple devices, right-click and redefine them.
- Device browser: You can see all managed devices in one paged, sortable table with a detailed sidebar.
- Powerful filters: You can filter by device status, order number, model family or device management server. You can stack filters to narrow down the view to the exact devices you need.
- MDM server list and tasks: This allows you to see each server and what devices are currently assigned to it.
- Bulk assign and unassign: You can select multiple devices in the table, select the destination server, and apply the change. You can also import CSV if that’s what you want.
- Export to CSV or JSON: You can remove your selection or filtered results from the macOS share sheet.
- Multi-profile link: If you manage multiple Apple environments, you can easily switch between different instances of Apple Business and Apple School Manager from the sidebar and manage credentials in settings.
Christiansen also perfectly synced the app with Apple’s latest API additions. The app supports AppleCare coverage lookups (API 1.3) and can pull Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and internal Ethernet MAC addresses for macOS (API 1.4), as well as iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and visionOS (API 1.2). Most recently, the software added support for API 1.5, which includes an array format for MAC addresses on devices with multiple network interfaces.
