Later this year, Apple will debut an updated version Mac Studio With M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips – the long-awaited update. The current Mac Studio, released in early 2025, includes the M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips, so it’s pretty far behind, at least at the high end.
according to Bloomberg’s Mark GurmanM5 based Mac Studioit should just be a chip update, still on track to launch this year. Looking to 2028, there could be more exciting changes in the pipeline.
If you have been to the market once Mac StudioI’m sure you’ve already felt enough pain. In between incredibly long wait times due to a demand growth and lack of supplythe fact that the computer already has an M3 Ultra chip, and now you will need a stomach higher prices thanks to the recent price hike.
Fortunately, things should be looking up – at least a little.
The M5 update is coming later this year
I know, stop me if you’ve heard this before – but it’s new Mac Studio it should come soon. Last year’s reports said that this update should be on the market around WWDC. That went out the window once the memory crunch hit, but even so, it’s never fun to wait any longer.
Fortunately, with the M5 Ultra version “for this year”, your wait should be over soon Mark Gurman. There won’t be any major design overhauls with this new design, just new chips. The next iteration may be a different story.
M7 Ultra in 2028
There are more exciting changes in the pipeline for Apple in 2028 Mac StudioMust be equipped with M7 Ultra. In case you missed it, Apple does is reported to have jumped All high-end chips with the M6 family will therefore have a base M6, but no M6 Pro, Max or Ultra. From report:
Apple has two Mac Studio updates: the M5 Ultra version coming this year and the M7 Ultra update scheduled for 2028. I’m told Apple is also working on internal changes to the high-powered desktop, including a better heatsink to improve thermal performance as the machine takes on AI workloads on a more demanding device. At least I don’t expect a major redesign with the M5 Ultra.
A better cooler is definitely a welcome addition for anyone already pushing them Mac Studio although it is not clear if this change applies to the M5 Ultra model or the M7 Ultra model, but to its extent.
Gurman also mentioned the possibility of the M7 Ultra getting a redesign, though he noted that Apple tends to stick with desktop designs for a long time.
In general, if you a Mac Studio fan or potential buyer, hopefully this is positive news for you.
