TL;DR
- Days after Tim Cook warned of rising component prices, Apple has raised prices on several products, including the MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, iPad Pro and HomePod series.
- iPhone prices remain unchanged for now, but future models, including the iPhone 18 series, could eventually see similar increases.
- Apple’s high prices could create a ripple effect in the industry, giving Android and other competitors more room to raise prices.
“Apple” has now raised prices in several parts of its line. The MacBook Neopositioned as the company’s most affordable laptop at $599, it now starts at $699. The MacBook Air went from $1,099 to $1,299, while the entry-level MacBook Pro now costs $1,999 instead of $1,699. Apple’s tablets didn’t escape the hikes either, with the iPad Air going from $599 to $749, and the 11-inch iPad Pro going from $999 to $1,199.
Even Apple’s HomePod speakers are getting more expensive. The standard HomePod now starts at $349, down from $299, while the HomePod mini has gone from $99 to $129. A notable exception is the iPhone. For now, Apple seems to be holding the line on smartphone pricing. So, it may just be a matter of time. Future iPhone models, including upcoming ones iPhone 18 seriesmay face similar price increases as a result.
Brands have been talked about for months increased costs. Between the more expensive components, manufacturing costs, tariffs, and AI investment, building the devices isn’t getting any cheaper.
However, the bigger story is that Apple’s price hikes may not stop with Apple. The company remains the benchmark for most of the consumer electronics industry, and its pricing decisions often influence competitors.
When Apple charges more, rival brands get a breather. A laptop that looks expensive next to the $1,099 MacBook Air suddenly looks more affordable when Apple’s equivalent costs $1,299. The same logic applies to smartphones. If future iPhones become more expensive, Android manufacturers may raise prices as a cheaper option. For consumers, this may be the most important package: Apple’s recent price hikes may just be the first domino to fall.
