Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott has joined a list of elected officials calling on Apple to change its handling of the Towson Town Center store closure. Here are the details.
Apple has been under pressure to close the Towson store
On June 20, it will be Apple always close three retail stores, including the Apple Towson Town Center, the first Apple Store to be combined in the United States.
Shortly after the closure was announced, the IAM Community accused Apple is treating Towson workers unfairly by denying them the same relocation opportunities it offers workers at the other two stores.
However, Apple says its agreement with the union requires it to offer transfers only to locations within 50 miles of the Towson store, and layoffs are possible for workers who cannot be transferred. The company adds that it has no plans to open another store in that radius.
Since the controversy began, the IAM Union has received support from several elected officials, including Maryland legislators, 40 members of Congressand Gov. Wes Moore.
Now Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott has also expressed his support for the Towson store workers.
In an op-ed, Gov. Scott X reiterated the argument that the impact of Apple’s decision goes beyond the direct workers affected, arguing that “when a replacement store moves away from Towson without planning, it alienates the communities that helped build its success and makes critical services even more inaccessible.”
Mayor Scott also urged Apple to “give these workers the same opportunities as workers at non-union stores,” adding that Townson will “fight for fair treatment” on behalf of store workers.
Reacting to the statement, IAM International President Brian Bryant thanked Mayor Scott for his support and urged Apple to act before the store closes next Saturday.
Apple, for its part, has not commented further on the controversy since publication this statement As of April 28, neither Towson nor the other two stores have indicated plans to change their closing dates.
