Bear software developers announce Lettera, a beautiful Markdown editor for Mac

Now available in beta, Lettera is a standalone Markdown editor built around the same editor that powers Bear 2. Here are the details.

In June 2021, the developers behind the Bear app a status update In Panda, codename for “next Editor” for Bear. In it, they detailed several new features coming to the app, including a “full transition to Markdown.”

Two years later, Bear 2.0 came with more than 20 extras, including the ability to hide Markdown syntax while typing and support for Markdown extensions that enhance features like tables, annotations, and YAML.

Developers this week announced Lettera, in response to the many users who asked if (the new editor built for Bear 2.0) could live as a standalone application.

Lettera is a native, elegant Markdown editor for macOS. From a quick blog project to a complete technical documentation system, it’s built for writers, researchers, developers, and anyone else who works with documentation.

Letter can open individual Markdown files for reading and editing, or entire folders that serve as the writing workspace. By default, the app opens a specific Lettera folder in iCloud, but users can also open any folder stored on their Mac.

• Write in WYSIWYG Markdown Lettera follows CommonMark standard with live rendering. Markdown syntax is hidden when you’re not editing, so you can type and preview in one place. BIU formatting bar is also available for quick styling
• Format with rich stylestables, quotes, lists, code blocks, inline images and attachments, Math formula with Mathjax, and more.
• Share and export Copy your posts as plain text, rich text, Markdown or HTML. When it’s time to send your work somewhere, export to PDF, JPG, ePub and more
• Manage files and folders directly from the sidebar without exiting the application. Open files in tabs to work on multiple documents at once. Image files can be viewed directly within the editor
• Contents Navigate your document with a full outline and jump to any section with a single click

Letter is now available on TestFlight, allowing users to test it and provide feedback to help shape its development, from breaking bugs to improving the app’s look, feel, and functionality.
