Activision just went and pushed a fairly significant piece Call of Duty news about the most casual fashion; the last generation of consoles came out.
In response to rumors that surfaced online via the official Call of Duty X account, the Microsoft-owned publisher has confirmed a major change for the game, which we assume will be Modern Warfare 4.

It’s remarkable enough that both last-gen consoles have lasted this long, but then you have to wonder why. Given the cost of making a Call of Duty game, the player base had to be there to make it worthwhile. So on that front, there are probably a lot of people who won’t be able to play this year’s game.
But I’m glad to hear it. First, it’s no longer a good enough experience on Xbox One and PS4.
i tried Black Ops 7 on Xbox One in its beta period and the difference was night and day. Granted, I haven’t been back since, but I can’t imagine it was possible to improve it enough, given its condition at the time. I said then that we need to put the past behind us and it looks like we are doing that.
Modern Warfare 4 (if that’s what it’s really called) is already up against it. Xbox recently decided remove future Call of Duty titles from Xbox Game Passthis is one of the factors that can affect the number of players. Now we know that the last generation of console players is also out.
Then, of course, the expected goliath: GTA 6. Call of Duty traditionally launches in the 4th quarter of the year these days, and there’s nothing to say that this will be any different in 2026. GTA 6 is currently set to launch on November 19. Call of Duty is great, but GTA is something else.
So it’s going to be an interesting year to watch on all fronts. On the one hand, not being overwhelmed by the last generation of consoles should give it some breathing room to create a better overall product. But with two self-imposed decisions that could reduce the number of players and nothing anyone can do about it… I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
