AI coding isn’t perfect, Torvalds says, but human code isn’t.
Given how useful AI can be for programmers, the open source community is asking itself: Does AI code belong on Linux? Regardless of what others believe, Linus Torvalds himself said that AI is a tool and “clearly useful.” If you don’t like it, Torvalds says, you can either do it yourself or leave it.
Linus Torvalds says that Linux is not “anti-AI”.
Although he admits it has its problems
in a message sent to Linux kernel mailing listTorvalds details his attitude toward humans using artificial intelligence to code for nuclear. Torvalds begins by saying that Linux is not an anti-AI project and that if people don’t like it, “they can do open source and shut it down. Or they can just walk away.”
Torvalds explains that while the AI coding tool’s usefulness was a bit hit or miss a year ago, it’s “clearly useful” these days. He says there are many questions that need to be addressed about the use of artificial intelligence, such as how the economy will evolve; but it paid off in terms of usefulness.
Torvalds admits that AI can be “a bit of a pain tool” given how it adds to the work that supervisors have to do and detects tons of bugs. However, he knows how much help it can be and won’t force anyone to adopt AI, but he won’t go after people who use it.
In fact, he has some pretty harsh words for those against it:
No, the AI is not perfect. But Christ, anyone pointing out the problems with AI better look in the mirror and point to themselves at the same time. Because natural intelligence is not always that great.
We’re already seeing an adoption of artificial intelligence in the Linux scene; while Ubuntu is moving forward with AI toolsthe The Fedora community revolted against the idea of an “AI Developer Desktop”.. Honestly, it feels like the AI conversation is just getting started.
