What you need to know
- Google has detailed an update for Gemini for Home and its Home app that rolled out in late May.
- The cameras are getting another significant update that lets users create automations based on what their cameras see.
- In the app, Google is improving media controls, improving Gemini’s speed for common commands, and improving the ability to navigate through multiple tasks on one command.
Google Home users have been receiving back-to-back updates for weeks now, and late May is no different, as the latest one adds a major upgrade for cameras.
Twins For Home is a key part of Google’s vision for the smart home environment. Company this week shared the details about a rolling update that brings a key “visual insights” feature to your connected cameras. Google has made cameras smarter thanks to artificial intelligence that has the ability to “see” or “understand” what it sees. Now users can create automations based on what their cameras see.
Android Central’s Take
Not only is this camera update the highlight of Google’s late May patch, but it personally feels like the most important anyway. I can imagine this would be useful for frequent events. Like something that ends up in your trash, or a person or delivery that’s too important to miss. Google gives us an easy way to automate based on camera events (what our camera sees) without having to “build it from scratch”.
Using written descriptors, users can design automations and choose which camera to follow them. Google reports that users can track Amazon deliveries, kids coming home, car doors left open, and more. they can create automation for Moreover, users can get specific when referring to people by mentioning their names; but you need to enable Familiar Faces for this to work.
On the other hand, Google is solving a few problems with artificial intelligence during voice responses. This week’s patch notes that users who question Gemini while playing music can say “stop” without interrupting their playlist. apple Music support is back and Bluetooth Connectivity systems have been improved. Users can say “Bluetooth Pair” to their speakers or phones.
Voice assistance continues to be a focus for Google. The notes say Gemini can act on “random language” commands for lights and thermostats, such as “set the brightness to zero” or “make the living room a little warmer.” Frequently used commands with Gemini should feel a little faster. What’s more, Google has re-enhanced Gemini’s ability to multitask with a single command.
Gemini’s tracking capabilities for timers/alarms have been improved, and users should find “fuller answers” when asking questions about sports, general knowledge, and the weather.
TLC for the program
Familiar Faces is getting a UI update this week. Google says that the UI should now give you better information about suggested names. The company’s smart home widgets for devices now have “improved responsiveness” when controlling smart plugs and lights. Users can find a faster way to update Voice Match in settings, while a fix is rolling out for Wear OS, bringing back “name and ranking options for easier favorites management from your wrist.”
A week ago, Google announced it Gemini for homeopening access to carriers and hardware manufacturers. The highlight was “Mounted in Gemini.” Google partners who create hardware for consumers can easily use the capabilities of Gemini without worrying about hard work (research). These manufacturers can easily integrate Gemini into their speakers and cameras.
In addition, Google said it is making its Home Premium plan available to ISPs, carriers and security companies.
