While reliable errors – or lies – are a common problem with large language models used in AI chatbots, a common drawback of ChatGPT is that it often miscounts the number of occurrences of the letter “R” in the word “strawberry”. Although OpenAI tries to take a victory lap around it, a lot other confident mistakes were also mentioned in the answers.
As AI chatbots improve, one of the biggest mistakes remains the frequency of these “tools”. will confidently lie to you. If the information is wrong, the chatbot won’t notice, and if you call it out, the AI can chase the answer and keep making mistakes while saying it’s true. This is a problem that is often cited as a threat to these tools given how much resources AI takes.
A common example of this with OpenAI’s ChatGPT is the question of how many times the letter “R” appears in the word “strawberry”.
It’s been a whileasking ChatGPT about this will result in the chatbot returning an incorrect answer and often using the word “strawberry” no use the letter “R” three times. Other AI models often faced the same problem.

Another common stumbling block was “I want to wash my car today, but the car wash is only 50 meters away. I have to walk to drive there”, ChatGPT often recommends walking, even though there is a very obvious logical problem there.
Of course, both of these work now if you try it in ChatGPT, but that’s it suspicious they can be coded solutions. A lot Responses to OpenAI’s post show other times the chatbot fails the same logic. For example, “How many r’s are in cranberries” repeatedly sees the chatbot continue to respond with “’cranberry’ has 1 ‘R’.” Of course, that’s wrong.
Hard-coding solutions in AI chatbots isn’t new, but it’s kind of funny to see OpenAI touting this “fix” when the root of the problem is so obvious – in a dystopian way.
