Cheap OLED monitors solve one big problem while hiding many others


For years, buying an OLED gaming monitor was an expensive luxury for most gamers. Even when OLED displays dropped from $1,000 to around $600-800, affordability wasn’t necessary for widespread adoption. Gamers always wanted true blacks and near-zero response times, but they were content with IPS displays.

Over the past year, we’ve seen popular brands go on sale at a high level affordable OLED monitors. For just $350, you can now own a 27″ 1440p 240Hz QD-OLED display. This new crop of cheaper OLED monitors is certainly exciting, but gamers may flock to them without realizing the trade-offs. You should think twice about the trade-offs before buying one, because they are willing to live with OLED.

OLEDs are finally cheap, removing the biggest hurdle for gamers

OLEDs are ultimately just as valuable as any other display

If you pay attention to the price of OLED monitors, you’ll notice that several cheaper models have gone up in the past few months. OLED prices seem to have suddenly dropped, making $350 the new entry price. Thanks to Samsung Display’s entry-level QD-OLED panels, these models from Samsung, Dell, MSI and AOC are finally what you can call “affordable” without the mental gymnastics.

After all, even a year ago you couldn’t count on new OLED monitors selling for less than $500. For $350, you get a pretty impressive set of features – with a 27″ 1440p 240Hz QD-OLED panel HDMI 2.1 and a 3-year combustion warranty. Not every $350 model will have the same feature set, but gamers have plenty of decent options at their disposal in 2026. Many of these affordable OLEDs have also been favorably reviewed by trusted outlets.

You can even get a similarly specced W-OLED from Gigabyte for around $400, which is nothing to scoff at. The appeal of OLED gaming has been clear for years, but high prices have always been a deterrent for gamers until now.

A lower peak brightness can still play spoilsport

One of the biggest advantages of OLED displays is the HDR experience. OLEDs’ per-pixel dimming results in true blacks, but high peak brightness is the other half of the HDR equation. Without it, the picture doesn’t “pop” and your games and other content don’t look as impressive as you imagine. A True Black 400 rating is widely accepted as the minimum standard for a decent HDR experience on OLED monitors.

This rating calls for a peak brightness of at least 400 nits in an 8% window and a full-screen brightness of at least 250 nits. Once you start looking at cheaper OLEDs, you’ll notice that there are no True Black ratings. Models like the Alienware AQ2726DM and the Samsung OLED G5 (G50SF) can only reach about 200 nits of full-screen brightness. Even their SDR brightness is in the same range, limiting highlights that make for a great HDR image.

More expensive models in the $500-$600 segment routinely have full-screen SDR and HDR brightness in the 260-275 nits range. They are certified True Black 400 or True Black 600 and guarantee a high-end HDR experience. With a budget OLED, you’re making a legitimate compromise. You can control the lighting in your room by controlling it, but you should know this before you buy one.

In 2026, an HDMI 2.1 port on an OLED monitor should not be a rarity. However, this is the case with some budget OLED monitors on the market. The Alienware and Samsung models I mentioned ship with HDMI 2.0 ports, which limit the maximum bandwidth of the signal the monitor can handle without compression.

While DP 1.4 is capable of 1440p at 240Hz, if you want an uncompressed 10-bit signal, it sits right outside. HDMI 2.1’s 48 Gbps bandwidth allows for an uncompressed 1440p 240Hz 10-bit signal. Some cheap OLED monitors will limit your maximum refresh rate when going from 8-bit to 10-bit color depth. Again, this may not affect your gaming experience too much, but you should be aware when logging in.

If you are also waiting for a full-fledged USB hub, KVM switchor enhanced audio on your new OLED monitor, very few models will be in the $350 range. If you look carefully at the spec sheet, HDMI 2.1 can be provided in this price range, but manufacturers often cut other details to keep costs to a minimum.

No monitor is perfect, but cheaper OLEDs can be less so

Before spending $350 or $400 on a budget OLED display, you should do your due diligence. Make sure you are aware of the trade-offs and are willing to live with them. Whether it’s HDMI 2.0, low build quality, low peak brightness, or the high blacks of a QD-OLED panel, you shouldn’t be caught off guard. As long as your experience is not affected by the discounts, the purchase makes sense.
