It has been one of the longest running live service titles in the gaming industry Fate 2, Bungie2017 sequel to the original space fantasy looter shooter that received expansions and content updates. XboxPC and PlayStation for nearly a decade. And now, Destiny 2 is coming to an end after a series of disappointing releases, delays, and decisions about its overall direction.
The final content update, Victory Monument, is scheduled for release on June 9; is active when Fate 2 Development will cease with Bungie and publisher PlayStation (Sony) to keep the servers open but eventually withdraw from the project. Players fear that this could be the end of Destiny as a franchise and gathered to increase the Destiny 2 petition while promising to flood their servers next week.
Of course, one thing all fans want to know is: what happened? What caused Destiny 2’s rapid decline and this sudden and abrupt end? Some believe the game was largely abandoned for the development of Bungie’s new PvP mining shooter. marathonand as a result, I feel bitter about that project.
However, several former Bungie developers have publicly directed their criticism at management and leadership at the studio, arguing that Marathon should not have been the target of the community’s ire. One such developer is former Bungie community manager Liana Ruppert, and I think what she had to say recently is important for fans to read.
“Oh, I don’t know, maybe listen to the leadership when the developers call out for their own greed? Destiny didn’t get a lot of money,” he said. he answered To a commenter who asked why a company as big as Bungie had trouble pulling together the resources to support Destiny 2.
You don’t understand me. Or what the developers say. We say that it goes into the management’s pocket. You should be upset, but keep the blame where it belongs. A marathon has less impact than one might thinkMay 27, 2026
“You don’t understand me. Or what the developers are saying. We’re saying it’s in management’s pockets.” he added. “You should be upset, but keep the blame where it belongs. A marathon has less impact than you think.”
He he continued to say he’s been “screaming about it for three years and all I got was blacklisted by (former Bungie CEO Pete Parsons)” and that players should “Vote with your wallet, and if you’re loud with your frustration, make sure you’re loud with what you love.”
Parsons is no longer a developer and has been replaced as studio head by Justin Truman; Ruppert noted “This effect is still there and it takes a long time to eradicate, unfortunately the cancer was deep.”
It’s worth noting that comments from Ruppert and other former Bungie developers echo similar criticisms made in 2024. the studio was surrounded by significant cuts after reductions are already happening at the end of 2023. Several former employees spoke out against the mismanagement and called for Parsons, who was still CEO at the time, to resign.
While much of the truth is always covered up, statements from former Bungie employees make it clear to me that the fate of Destiny 2, and potentially the Destiny series, is to blame for the fate of the studio’s management. I hope for a light at the end of the tunnel for the developer, but with Sony recorded a $565 million impairment loss on the studioI can’t help but worry about his future.
