Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump called Macari over the weekend to chastise him for not moving fast enough to allow flavored vapes from Los Angeles maker Glas, specifically menthol, mango and blueberry flavors. The FDA approved and released these flavored products days later new policy this will make flavored vapes easier to market.
Trump administration officials have noted that Makary has angered anti-abortion activists, who have accused him of moving slowly in an investigation into the safety of the abortion and miscarriage pill mifepristone.
Officials said Makaryn clashed with other health officials and had trouble running his agency. He reportedly made enemies among lobbyists for the biotechnology, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries. Meanwhile, public health experts criticized Makary for changes in the FDA’s vaccine reviews that fit Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy’s anti-vaccine agenda.
Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Health Research, told the Times: “He hurt almost everyone involved in the FDA issues, which is not an easy thing to do.”
According to Politico, which first reported on Makary’s resignation. It was Kennedy— Not Trump — he called on to plan to fire McCarthy, though Trump had to agree.
