It is official. Android PCs are coming this fall under the name of Googlebooks, which includes the best Chrome OS and Android together as an OS platform developed for laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo and others. PC OS competition is heating up with Microsoft Trying to fix Windows 11.
The timing couldn’t be better for Google. Currently with Windows 11 and Microsoft only just more people are eager to jump ship from Windows than they are to solve their biggest problems. Google’s Android PCs will go on sale later this year, just as Windows 10’s extended support window closes.
There is a very large percentage of Windows users who only need a PC for basic productivity tasks, and these Android PCs will be more than capable of handling that workflow. A web browser, word processor, email client, and music streaming software are things many people want their computer to handle. Combined with fast OS updates, long battery life, and easy UX, Google could be on to a winner.
I think it’s clear that Google is grabbing attention while the iron is hot and taking advantage of the slow decline of Windows to become irrelevant in the eyes of consumers. It will build Android for PCs in the coming years, targeting not only low-end PCs but also high-end PCs. Google is already calling it a premium PC experience, meaning its crosshairs are squarely aimed at Windows PCs.
Microsoft has allowed Windows to degrade over the past two years, and now both Google and Apple are exploiting this bug. Microsoft was in the spotlight when trying to do AI Apple went into business for itself Building a Mac that makes switching from Windows more accessibleand started creating the Google version Android that finally has potential replace it Windows.
Now, Windows users have more options than ever to move away from Microsoft’s legacy platform. And heritage is the word. Windows has been built on decades of legacy code and compatibility, making it difficult to compete with more modern platforms. Android and macOS feel faster, look better, and are considered more stable due to their modernity.
And that doesn’t even factor in the fact that Windows doesn’t have any presence in the mobile space. The harmony between iPhone and Mac, and now Android phone and Googlebook, will be unparalleled. Windows Phone Link is great, but it can only do so much when it doesn’t build Microsoft’s connected mobile operating systems.
I don’t expect Windows to become irrelevant overnight. But if Google plays its cards right and Microsoft doesn’t start taking Windows more seriously, Android PCs could be the beginning of the end for Windows. Windows is still in the eyes of the enterprise and gamers, but even gamers don’t guarantee it forever now Linux games are a real contender.
I think it’s clear that big tech is more hungry than ever for a piece of the Windows pie. Microsoft has enjoyed desktop OS dominance for far too long and is clearly complacent. Now, companies like Google, Apple, heck, even Valve want in, helping a large portion of the market clamor more than ever for alternatives to Windows.
Microsoft did it to itself. The company has made a number of strategic mistakes around Windows over the past two years, as its obsession with artificial intelligence has eaten away at people’s goodwill toward the OS.
Windows K2 It acknowledges that Microsoft messed with Windows and is now struggling to maintain its user base and fix the platform and position it as a true competitor in this space. The question is, will this be enough and do people want Microsoft to fix it at this point? I’m afraid the answer for many will be no.
Ultimately, competition is good, and Microsoft would be wise to take Googlebooks seriously, even though it doesn’t pose much of a threat on paper right now. So what do you think? Will Googlebooks be the next big thing in laptop computing? Let us know your thoughts.
