TL;DR

  • Google is now rolling out Gemini-themed wallpaper-based Material You in the Google app after testing the feature internally.
  • The redesign is currently visible in Gemini’s floating overlay UI, where colors dynamically adapt to the user’s wallpaper theme.

Google is trying to roll out wallpaper-based themes for Gemini after previously testing the feature internally.

Earlier this year Android Authority informed Tested by Google Material You Color theme for Gemini within the Google app. At the time, the feature was hidden and had to be activated manually. Now, users are starting to see the redesign live in beta versions of the Google app, and we’ve also confirmed the change running on our own Pixel 9 beta version 17.27.33.sa.arm64.

The update brings Gemini more in line with Android’s Material You design language by dynamically adjusting parts of the interface to match your wallpaper colors. So far, Gemini has retained Google’s old blue-and-white visual style, rather than completely embracing wallpaper-based themes.

Changes are currently limited to Gemini’s floating overlay user interface. When Gemini is invoked on the home screen or in another app, the floating panel now takes on a subtle color based on the system theme, while the Gemini Live button appears in a darker accent color obtained from the wallpaper palette.

As we noticed in our previous teardown, the basic Gemini interface still doesn’t fully support dynamic theming. This means Google can take a gradual rollout approach, starting with smaller interface elements before rolling out the redesign more broadly.
