Google hasn't fixed my biggest Gemini problem with Android Auto

Gemini for Android Auto has been divisive to say the least, but for all its pros and cons, there’s one big problem that often annoys me.

That is, Gemini continues to talk after I have already completed the interaction. The voice interactions behind the wheel are useful because they aim to reduce the amount of time I need to interact with the touchscreen and in turn take my eyes off the road.

Commands like “go to (place)” and “add stop here (insert name here)” often trigger Gemini to bring up a list of options on Google Maps. These options are displayed on the Maps screen, and Gemini starts speaking the list so you can complete all interactions with voice commands. It’s a great combination, but the problem is that Gemini won’t stop talking when you choose to interact with the touch screen. If I use Gemini to start the process – which is the only option when your car is in motion – the assistant will continue to talk even if I select and confirm my destination via the map. “Which would you like?” Gemini will say, even though the options are gone from the screen and my route is already in place, it’s just sitting there waiting for an answer.

What disappoints me is that disconnect. Assistant in Android Auto has never had this problem, interacting with the touchscreen finishes voice commands because the user has already finished what they wanted to do in the first place.

This has been an issue with Gemini for months now, after first rolling out on my devices last November. And yet Google hasn’t solved it. Sometimes I’ll see if the twins understand that I’m interacting with the touch screen instead – imagine that hand movement in the age of AI agents – but it’s never consistent.

Google, please fix this. Android Auto, as users rightly call it, has a lot of problems with Gemini, but it’s incredibly simple and in-your-face.
