Ahead of the upcoming release of the Google Home Speaker, a new “Google Home Display” has appeared in the Google app code, suggesting a new Nest Hub-esque device is in the works.
Google’s list of smart displays is very short. Original Google Home Hub was launched in 2018 before later being rebranded as Nest Hub a Nest Hub Max launches in 2019 a bigger screen, a built-in Nest Cam and better speakers. in 2021 Nest Hub (2nd generation) released and since then, there has been silence when it comes to smart displays.
The move to Gemini as Google’s home assistant, as well as the Google Home Speaker, brought back the hardware announced last year with plans for a “Spring 2026” release. In other words, anytime now.
Obviously, Google has asked about a potential return to smart displays with Google Home chief Anish Kattukaran explains in October That the smart display is “the ultimate form factor to deliver a truly great home experience,” but without confirming any plans for an actual launch.
Looks like things are really going on behind the scenes.
The Google Home app for iOS hides every smart speaker and smart display Google has released to date, as well as a list of Google devices like Chromecasts, Nest Cams, and third-party devices. Google Home Speaker is on this list and as mentioned By @aaronp613 on Twitter/X, analyst for MacRumorsA device called “Google Home Display” has now appeared on that list.
There’s no other information about the device at the moment, but the name suggests it’s some kind of smart display, and given that it’s been five years since the last Nest Hub, it’s an outdated display. The name “Google Home Screen” also matches the speaker’s simple branding.
We’ll have to wait and see, but with Google Home Speaker right around the corner and I/O just around the corner, let’s just say I’m a little excited personally.
