The company announced today a bigger update it can solve some of your smart home problems. Camera feeds will be easier to navigate and tagging AI events should be simpler. For home voice assistance, the move to Gemini 3.1 should mean the robot is less bulky and more reliable.
According to Google, Home users signed up for the early access channel should already have the Gemini 3.1 update. Google first released this AI model on other platforms in February, but that launch did not include Google’s smart speakers. With the extension to Home, Google says these speakers will be able to take advantage of Gemini 3.1’s “advanced reasoning to better interpret and execute complex, multi-step voice commands.” Of course, every Gemini update says something like that.
Google has cited various AI assessments that show Gemini 3.1 better at parsing large, complex instructions. He showed gains on tests like the ARC-AGI-2 and Humanity’s Last Exam, both of which require difficult logic problems that require domain-specific knowledge. It’s unclear how useful such a capability would be for a smart speaker that specializes in short interactions, but if you want, you can have long conversations with Gemini on your smart home devices. Google notes that the improved model can process multiple different tasks in a single request, saving you from splitting tasks into multiple commands.
The AI-powered Ask Home feature also expands beyond the app with this update. In the near future, a dedicated Gemini chatbot for Home will be available in the Home web interface, allowing you to check camera history and create automations via chat. Although this will start as a preview feature.
