TL; DR
- Google Keep for Android is testing a new “Export to Bookmarks” feature.
- The feature was listed as a debug option, which suggests it’s in the early stages of testing.
- While this makes data portability easier for other Markdown-enabled apps, it doesn’t yet provide native Markdown editing in the Keep app for Android.
Google Keep is one of those Google apps that thrives on its simplicity, but that doesn’t mean users haven’t asked for more. For example, Markdown support is one of them Long-requested features for Keephowever, Google has yet to add native Markdown support to the Keep app. That’s not changing yet, but the Keep app on Android may soon make working with Markdown easier thanks to export support.
Markdown is a lightweight, easy-to-read markup language that allows users to format plain text using special characters such as # for headings, * for bold, and _ for italics.
Google Keep does not natively support Markdown formatting (although it does provide standard Rich Text Formatting via manual UI buttons). However, you can add Markdown support to Keep on the Web through third-party browser extensions. Depending on the extension, you can get live rendering, syntax highlighting, and export capabilities to Markdown-enabled tools. It’s a roundabout way of getting Markdown support in Keep, and frankly, it defeats a good part of Markdown’s simplicity.
In Google Keep v5.26.191.01.90 on Android, we discovered lines indicating that the app can export notes to Markdown.

Export to Markdown (debug)
We learned from the patch files that after long-pressing on a note in Google Keep, the Export to Markdown option will likely appear in the three-dot menu (screenshot provided for reference).

Here are some caveats to be aware of. The line clearly states that the Export to Markdown option is for debugging, indicating that Google plans to do extensive testing before the feature is considered ready for users.
Additionally, the ability to export Markdown notes (.md file extension) from Keep is not the same as natively supporting Markdown editing within Keep, so users will still need to request proper Markdown support from Google.
We’ll let you know when we learn more about Markdown support in Google Keep.
