Google Photos is a great backup service for photos and videos, but it’s not a must only what you might want to use. Whether mirroring your library on a local drive or something else, Google Photos adds a useful new option to schedule exports, including exporting only newly added content.
The ability to export from Google Photos has been part of Takeout for years now, but it’s either all or nothing. With potentially years worth of photo/video backups in your library, a single export can take up a ton of space and a ton of time just to download.
Google does addressing This pain point with “Incremental Extraction for Images” support.
This allows Google Takeout to export from Photos with one full export, followed by a scheduled export that includes anything new that’s been added to your library since the initial export. Like Google explains:
- Full initial export: Your first scheduled export contains all your selected photos and albums.
- Future exports: Subsequent exports in your schedule include items downloaded, backed up, created, or edited since your last successful backup. This saves you time and storage space.
You can access the new option Via Google Takeout by choosing only Images as export option. From there, you can send bi-monthly exports with files up to 50GB for the next year.
