How to get viral disco app icon pack on Pixel now

If you spend any time on tech Twitter, you’ve probably come across Race Johnson’s semi-viral post with several application icons with a disco ball effect called “discomorphism”. The post got enough attention to the point where Android president Sameer Samat joked about making a disco icon pack for Android and sharing a Chrome icon with a unique discomorphism design.

Fast forward to last Friday and Sameer was true to his word – he announced it disco icons are now available on Pixel phones. No, this isn’t an end-of-April prank or Sameer just having fun in the light of Google I/O. Disco app icons are real and you can download them on your Pixel right now.

To use the disco icon pack, you need a Pixel running Android 16 QPR3. The update started rolling out back in March, so unless you actively avoid software updates on your Pixel, you should already have it.

Added Android 16 QPR3 new “Create” option for icon packsScribbles offers five types of AI-generated icons, including designs like Cookies and Easel. QPR3 has been rolled out to every Pixel model going back to the Pixel 6 series, so unless you have a Pixel 5 or older model, your Pixel is supported.

You can confirm Android version of Pixel by going here Settings -> About phone and then scroll down until you see Android versionn. If for some reason you’re running an older version than QPR3, you can update your phone by going here Settings -> System -> Software updates -> System update.

Assuming you have a Pixel device supported by the latest firmware, finding the disco icon pack is pretty simple. How to use it:

1. Tap and hold on any empty part of your home screen.
2. hit Wallpaper and style.
3. hit Badges.
4. hit Create.
5. hit Discotheque.
6. hit Download.

You’ll have to wait a few seconds for the icon pack to download, and then you should see the disco pack appear under “Your Styles” on the custom icons page. Swipe home and just like that the Pixel is rocking a disco app icon pack.

As in my experience with Google’s other AI-generated icon packs, the results can be hit or miss. Some app icons translate really well to disco design, while others don’t. I also don’t like how the icon pack uses a black background for each icon.

Still, it’s pretty remarkable that it exists at all – especially given how quickly Sameer and the rest of the Android team turned it around. It also gives me hope for the future of these custom icon packs. Support for third-party packs from the Play Store would still be great, but if Google can release new styles so quickly, I hope they keep it up.
