As part of its commitment to fix Windows 11 pain points, Microsoft is rebuilding Windows 11 Windows Insider Program making it easier to understand and allowing users to test new features and improvements.
This software overhaul simplifies the number of channels and allows for on-demand conversion of experimental functions without the need for third-party tools such as the popular ViveTool.
The new structure of the Windows Insider Program
Microsoft began this overhaul by rethinking channels and creating flag controls for new features in the Settings app.
For example, instead of multiple overlapping channels like Canary, Dev, Beta, and Release Preview, you now have two main tracks, including “Experimental” and “Beta.”
One thing to note here is that “Release Preview” is still a track, but it’s hidden by default. You have to manually activate it before it becomes available.
On the Windows Insider Program page, you’ll also find an “Advanced Options” section that you should use to select the version of the operating system you want to test. For example, versions 25H2 and 26H1, but there is a new “Function Platforms” version that replaces the “Dev” version.
The Feature Platforms version contains the most experimental changes that are not associated with any specific release of the operating system.
Finally, Microsoft is also adding a new “Feature Flags” page, which is a big deal because it’s a new experience that allows you to manage experimental features without resorting to ViveTool.
New Insider split experience
First, the company is reducing the number of channels from four to three, including Experimental, Beta and Release Preview.
Experimental track
The experimental experiment replaces the Canary and Dev Channels from the old structure. This experience includes the latest features and improvements. However, the previews in the track will be very unstable and you will experience problems.
One of the biggest advantages of this experiment is that you can enable or disable experimental features from the Feature Flags page. But this only applies to the features officially announced by the company.
If a particular build includes other features that aren’t ready for preview, you’ll need to use ViveTool when they’re available.
To enroll in this practice:
After you enroll your computer in the Windows Insider Program Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Programyou will have to choose “Experimental” option under the “Choose your experience” setting.
After choosing the experience, open it “Advanced Options” Select the version of the operating system you want to install and test. Currently, you can choose a version 25H2, 26H1and Feature platforms.
After selecting your experience and operating system version, check for updates on the Windows Update page, then download and install the latest preview build.
I want to make it clear that Microsoft is still in the process of migrating existing users from the old to the new structure. At the time of writing this guide, computer registration was the same as before. However, steps are expected to change in the future.
Changing tracks:
If you want to switch from Experimental for Beta experience, now you can with an in-place upgrade that protects your files.
To change channels Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Programchoose “Beta” Choice from the “Choose your experience” setting. If you also want to change the Windows version, select the version to test in the “Advanced Options” settings.
After completing the steps, an in-place upgrade will occur to change experiences.
While you can switch between experiences without realizing A clean install of Windows 11If you want to use it, you will need to perform a fresh installation Feature platforms version because it is not compatible with the current platform of the operating system.
Beta track
The beta experience is almost identical to the Beta Channel in the old build. However, the most noticeable difference is that all features announced through Microsoft’s official support site will be enabled by default.
In other words, in this practice, the company eliminates Controlled Feature Release (CFR) approach and you won’t have to use the “Feature Flags” page and you won’t have to resort to third-party tools to enable hidden upgrades.
Of course, the feature set in Beta will be very different from that in Experimental.
To enroll in this practice:
After you enroll your computer in the Windows Insider Program Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Programyou will have to choose “Beta” option under the “Choose your experience” setting.
After selecting the track, open it “Advanced Options” Select the version of the operating system you want to install and test. Currently, you can choose a version 25H2, 26H1and Feature platforms.
After selecting the experience and version, check for updates to download and install the latest preview build.

It’s important to remember that a clean install will only be required if you want to use it Feature platforms version because it is not compatible with the current platform of the operating system.
Release the preview track
Finally, you’ll also find the Release Preview experience, and similar to the old Release Preview Channel, you’ll get almost finished builds of the operating system on this track.
However, the experience does not appear to be standard. You will have to uncover it using the “Advanced Options” settings.
To enroll in this practice:
After you enroll your computer in the Windows Insider Program Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Programyou will have to open “Advanced Options”, turn it on “Show view here” Change the link and then select “Release Preview” option under the “Choose your experience” setting.
After selecting the track, open it “Advanced Options” Select the version of the operating system you want to install and test.
After selecting the experience and version, check for updates to download and install the latest preview build.
Enable experimental features
If you register your device Experimental In Experiment, you can enable experimental features that are no longer available on your setup without resorting to third-party tools like ViveTool.
To enable experimental features Windows 11open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Feature flagschoose “Active” For each of the available flags you want to enable, click the option “Apply Changes” button and then click on “Reboot Now” button.
Sign out of the Insider Program
If you no longer want to stay in the Windows Insider Program, you can opt out now while protecting your apps, settings, and files.
The process is simple. Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and turn it on “Unregister device” toggle switch.
This step will prompt an in-place upgrade while protecting your files, apps, and settings.
Replacement of Existing Insiders
While the new Windows Insider Program changes are available, Microsoft is in transition and is gradually transitioning users to the equivalent tracks.
First, devices already enrolled in the program will move to Beta or Experimental experience. However, this process will not change the version of the operating system, which is usually found in the “Advanced Options” settings.
- Devices inside Development channel will move to Experimental Practice for version 25H2.
- Devices inside Canary Channel will move to 28000 series structures Experimental Track for version 26H1.
- Devices inside Canary Channel running will move to 25900-series builds Experimental Track for Feature Platform version.
Windows Central’s Take
I like where the program is going. The old Insider structure was confusing, so streamlining the program was long overdue. However, the real win here is the built-in feature flags. One of the main reasons to join the Insider Program is early access to new features, and it’s frustrating to install a preview only to find those features locked behind limited releases.
This change ultimately makes this experience more consistent and predictable.
However, I would still be cautious on the Experimental track. The name is accurate, and from experience, these builds can break things in ways that aren’t worth risking on a mainframe. For most people, Beta remains the safer and more practical option.
Overall, this feels like Microsoft cleaning up its complexity. It’s a simpler system, but the benefits of testing early builds haven’t really changed.
