IoT gadget maker AcuRite shares rationale for killing customers’ favorite app

The fact that both applications are not “permanent”.

Online complaints Suggest that AcuRite has customers who are satisfied with the features of My AcuRite. However, long-term maintenance of the application is not sustainable for AcuRite, Bovee said.

“The technology behind My AcuRite is outdated and can no longer be maintained,” he said.

AcuRite is dropping the two programs to save money, but also because of “long-term support,” the executive said.

“Even if (My AcuRite) continues to work for many users, core systems require ongoing maintenance, updates, hosting, monitoring, security support and compliance work as phones, operating systems, cloud services and third-party integrations continue to change,” Bovee said.

A new online dashboard is coming

After announcing the end of its first app, AcuRite also removed its online control panel, which allowed users to control their devices through a web browser.

“Since the web dashboard, mobile apps, cloud services and device connections are all tied into the same legacy system, browser access cannot be provided separately once the platform is decommissioned,” Bovee said.

He said AcuRite is planning a new web-based dashboard for NOW AcuRite, but could not confirm a release date.

Despite customer frustration, Bovee hopes the new app won’t cause users to abandon their devices for a long time because AcuRite “spent a lot of money to bring these old weather stations to the new platform.”

“We know that the transition to AcuRite NOW has not been as smooth as some customers had hoped, and we understand the frustration that has caused. We do not discount that feedback,” said Bovee. “We ask for your patience as our team continues to fix issues, improve usability, and build the new platform. Our goal is to restore confidence by making AcuRite NOW the best user experience in home weather stations.”
