TL; DR

  • Google Home was experiencing problems with RGB lights for some users in April.
  • The Home app can control the brightness of the light, but not the color.
  • Google says these issues have been resolved.

Last month, Google Home users reported An annoying bug Around the RGB smart lights, the Home app still shows on/off and dimming controls, but no option to change the light color. There was an unofficial workaround, but it was kind of a hassle. However, Google says it has fixed the problem.

The problem only affected some users, while others reported that Google Home never misses a beat when it comes to controlling their smart lights. However, many users have said that their color-controlled lights in the Home only show options for a few different shades of white.

The solution to regaining color control in the home was to deal with each light’s own custom assistant — a situation that single smart home platforms like Google Home are designed to avoid.

In Comment on Reddit Late last week, the GoogleNestCommunity account announced that the issue had been officially fixed, advising users to try restarting the Google Home app if they still lost RBG lighting controls. The comment asks users to speak up if they’re still having issues – and considering there’s been no response, things have gotten better.

Anecdotally, RBG light controls actually work well on my own devices in Google Home, although I don’t know if every one of my smart home setups exhibits this behavior.

Controlling smart lighting using Google Home? Ever lost access to RBG controls? If so, is everything back to normal yet? Let us know in the comments.
