John Giannandrea has found a new role after leaving Apple


John Giannandrea, Apple’s former head of artificial intelligence, has ended his days at Apple earlier this month it was after his expected departure reported first in December. Now, it seems Giannandrea has already lined up her next role.

Apple’s former AI chief is joining UK startup CuspAI to help with US expansion, according to a report.

Apple’s former longtime AI chief John Giannandrea is joining scientific AI startup CuspAI to help build its US operations, Upstarts has learned.

The former head of Apple Intelligence plans to work part-time with CuspAI on efforts including robotics and Siri, three sources said, as the Cambridge, U.K.-based materials lab heads efforts to open a Bay Area office with an AI heavyweight.

The advisory role doesn’t yet have an official title attached to it, but represents Giannandrea’s first foray into the ecosystem since retiring from Apple two weeks ago.

According to the report, Giannandrea will help recruit CuspAI, which is looking to assemble its US-based team. But it is not expected to work only for CuspAI.

Instead, Apple’s former AI chief reportedly plans to spend time consulting for several different AI startups.

It’s unclear if Giannandrea is continuing to consult as an interim business plan, until he lands the right role full-time, or if he intends to stay in the arena for a while.

Prior to joining Apple, Giannandrea served as Google’s head of search and artificial intelligence, making him an expert especially big “get” For Apple.

However, his tenure is now seen by many as disastrous for Apple. Under Giannandrea’s leadership, the company fell behind in AI and eventually had to Trust Google to power the new Siri and other Apple Intelligence features.
