After months of rumors, today Lego officially announced the next big set The Lord of the Rings line: Minas Tirith, capital of Gondor. With 8,278 pieces, the watch is now the largest The Lord of the Rings The company’s set so far (exceeds Rivendell two thousand units!), and one the largest sets by number of pieces released so far.
Rather than the traditional playset style used by Rivendell or The Shire waste, or even Barad-dûr, Minas Tirith will depict the entirety of the White City as a micro-scale display piece on the exterior, drawing the tiered rings of the city from its gates to the courtyard behind the Tree. However, by opening the lowest walls and turning the entire building, you can reveal a minifigure-scale representation of the city’s streets and, perhaps more importantly, the Tower Hall of Minas Tirith, home to Denethor’s throne room as Steward of Gondor… the return of the kingof course.
This means that Minas Tirith needs some minifigures to develop its full playability, and it comes in plenty (though not as many as Rivendell). Inspired by both massive battles that besieged the city The return of the king and the events of the film’s climax after Sauron is defeated, Minas Tirith comes with 10 minifigures, including Gandalf the White, complete with Shadowfax; Gondorian squire merry in armour; Denethor (yes, he comes to dinner with cherry tomatoes), Faramir; Aragorn in royal armor; and Arwen, who carries the elves’ banner from Aragorn’s coronation. The group is rounded out by four Minas Tirith Warriors carrying spears and shields ready to defend the White City.
