Lenovo Yoga 7a is gorgeous, but AMD’s Ryzen AI 7 445 feels like a download

The mobile chip market is competitive and there is little room for a chip to be a weak proposition. AMD’s Crackan Point update, Gorgon Point, is stuck in a bit of no-mans land. Zen 6 is not ready and Ryzen AI 300 chips they’ve been a little underserved, so it makes sense to take a second swing using the same architecture. But execution does not.

The Lenovo Yoga 7a is a fantastic upgrade to an already excellent laptop and embodies exactly what we’ve come to expect from the Yoga: a sleek, premium feel with responsive specs, but AMD didn’t do Lenovo any favors here. The Ryzen AI 7 445 inside feels weak, underpowered, and calling it “Ryzen 7” feels like a misnomer. It’s a shame because this is a quality device.

My rig came with the highest internals, equipped with a Ryzen AI 7 445, Radeon 840M, 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD. All models come with an OLED touchscreen. This unit is currently priced at $1,250, although its regular price is $1,600. The low-spec model starts at $1,230.

It’s hard to go wrong with yoga

Lenovo sticks to what works

Starting with the positives, the Yoga 7a is a sleek laptop and very pleasing to the eye. The Seashell color is back and it’s a nice change from the black and gray we usually see on this type of laptop. The rounded edges are nice in the hands and most importantly the hinge is sturdy for the convertible. You won’t be able to lift the lid of the Yoga 7a with a finger, but that’s to be expected.

The keyboard feels good to type on, although some of the smooth coating on the main covers is still present from last year’s model, presumably as a measure of durability. Another very minor nitpick about the keyboard has to do with the legend and backlight. In certain lightning conditions where the backlight is 50% active, the legend is almost unreadable. I wasn’t able to capture it on camera at home, but at my local coffee shop I was having trouble getting some of the function keys out. The light is better at 100% brightness or completely off.

As for the rest of the human-level system, it’s hard to find fault. The screen is crystal clear and the included Yoga Pen feels great for sketching and writing. The webcam, speakers, and microphone all do what I’d call a satisfactory job, and the privacy cover is a Lenovo touch I couldn’t live without. I would appreciate less McAfee pop-ups, but that’s another article.

The I/O is what I consider quite good for such a laptop. A single USB-A port, 2 USB-C ports, and full-size HDMI provide what I require from my mid-range laptop.

Ryzen AI 7 445 does not live up to its name

It feels and feels like Ryzen 5

I really can’t say enough good things about the outside of this laptop, the “human” parts of my user interface. And the Ryzen 7 chip inside is disappointing.

Normally, I’d include more laptops in this table to give review readers a more complete picture of performance, but that’s not necessary here. The Ryzen AI 7 445 is significantly slower than its predecessor in both multi-core and single-core workloads. Multi-core makes sense, as the Ryzen AI 7 350’s eight cores were reduced to just six in the Gorgon Point update. I was a little shocked by the lack of a single core, and the Radeon 840M graphics did not give the Yoga 7a any advantage in the 3DMark tests. Compared to the Lunar Lake 258V, it’s more monstrous. This update is compatible with Panther Lake, but not with the latest generation Intel offerings.

Battery life was also average, but that’s not unusual with an OLED of this size and brightness. He was able to sustain a full-time job without pay, doing mostly web-based work. I would say 70WHr is enough for this type of laptop.

You should buy the Lenovo Yoga 7a 2-in-1 if:

• You need an affordable convertible laptop

• You want a great looking screen

• You want a laptop with excellent build quality

You should not buy Lenovo Yoga 7a 2-in-1 in the following cases:

• You care about multi-core CPU performance

• GPU performance is important to you

• You need a battery that can last several business days

“Should you buy this laptop” is hardly a yes or no question. Performance is important to me. I’m never going to drag this mid-range laptop around and the heaviest workload it’s going to handle is Photoshop, but if I happen to open Premiere Pro, choose to compile some code locally, or play the odd game, I don’t want to be reminded that I bought a laptop with a poor architecture.

The Yoga 7a makes some sense in a vacuum and its performance is acceptable, but I’d recommend getting the Yoga 7i with Intel Panther Lake inside. You get the same great Yoga features with better performance everywhere.
