Any corner of any household is bound to have tangled and messy cables. Usually it is a workplace, an office desk or a bedside table. No matter where the mess is, you need to tidy up your charging area.
One of the many ways to prevent this kind of confusion from occurring is to invest in a tangle-free, magnetic field. USB-C cables. I’m testing the Scosche MagStack USB-C to USB-C Magnetic Charging Cable to see if it’s a viable solution.
Scosche is not the only brand that produces such cables, but more on that later.
Achieve the perfect roll that stays curled
Magnetic USB-C is just like any other USB-C cable. You can choose the length you want; There are options from 60W to 100W, and these cables are nylon braided, so they’ll last longer than your average plastic-coated ones.
What makes it a “tangle-free” cable is the automatic winding of the Scosche MagStack Cable. And because it’s magnetic, the coil doesn’t retract. Instead, it stays in place and holds its shape until you move it.
It looks a lot neater than a bunch of cables crossing and tangling. It’s a cleaner look than cable ties, and you don’t have to untie the tie every time you want to extend the cable while you’re using it.
This works best if you have a metal desk, notice board, wall panel or desk.
For example, you can pull the cord from where it connects to the charger or the bottom outlet. If the cable is made of metal, you can simply attach it to the edge of the table with a magnet, instead of having to spin the cable around on the table or collect it in a tangled bundle.
When the cable is not in use, you can simply mount it on a metal wall panel or notice board.
Where to get a magnetic cable and is it worth it?
So far, I have only come across two brands that produce such magnetic cables: Statik and Scosche. In fact, Scosche partnered with Statik to develop their own version of the Scosche MagStack magnetic cable, so Statik gets all the credit.
The Scosche MagStack Tangle-Free USB-C to USB-C Magnetic 6ft Charging Cable has a power of 60W and is a USB-C 3.2 cable. For $29.99that’s not a bad price at all. There are tons of cool nylon braided colors and patterns to choose from, and there are also USB-C to USB-A or Lightning options. Unfortunately, not every option comes in the same wide range of colors or 6-foot options. So if you want a stronger cable with more options, go to the original creator.
Statik offers the Statik MagStack Pro, a stronger 100W nylon braided cable available in three solid colors and several options. First, you can choose between 3 feet and 6 feet long options. Second, you can choose from USB-C to USB-C, USB-A to USB-C, and Lightning to USB-C options. Basic 3-foot USB-C to USB-C the option costs $22.99while The 6-foot option costs $24.99.
Obviously, Static has more versatile options. To top it all off, you can even opt for a straighter cable style shaped like nylon braided fettuccine noodles. This C-to-C variant is called the Static MagStack Slim Pro, and it’s pricey $22.99 for 3ft version and $24.99 for longer 6 feet one.
Both Static and Scoche cables support a data transfer rate of 480 Mbps.
Whichever brand you go for, it will provide a neat, tangle-free solution at an affordable price. The quality is more or less the same, I found it solid and well made. The magnets are also strong enough to hold the weight of the coiled cable without unraveling.
Just don’t put your debit or credit card near the magnetic cord.
