Much has been made of the idea of employees effectively training their replacements when working with AI tools, though most employers don’t embrace it outright. Meta has apparently decided to drop all pretense that it isn’t. “Report” informs that “Reuters” agency published information about thisthe company recently sent out a memo informing employees about new tracking software that will be installed on their computers to track mouse movements and keystrokes to train artificial intelligence agents to perform specific work tasks.
According to a memo seen by Reuters, the surveillance tool (there’s no reason to pretend it’s anything else) is called the Model Capability Initiative, and it will record employees’ screens as they do their jobs. In addition, the company will reportedly increase its internal data collection efforts as part of its AI for Work program, dubbed the Agent Transformation Accelerator.
All this data will be used to train Meta’s artificial intelligence models to improve the functionality of its agents, which are designed to work autonomously and navigate between multiple systems and applications. According to Reuters, Meta’s current agent offerings struggle to perform certain actions that people have no problem with, such as selecting items from drop-down menus or using keyboard shortcuts. New employee monitoring systems will help improve these capabilities, and this should not raise any red flags for a company’s employees. is preparing to cut 10% of its workforce in the coming months.
Employees’ focus is that their jobs will not change as a result of constant digital eyes on them. The company pitched the program as an opportunity for Meta employees to “help our models get better just by doing their daily jobs,” and promised that the data would not be used for performance analysis or other potentially invasive purposes.
It’s hard to imagine that it’s mandatory for employees who have no incentive to participate in such a program. They have added exemplary training to their responsibilities without any apparent increase in compensation, and the new job requires them to surrender a sense of privacy because their work is not being tracked.
Meta clearly refers to artificial intelligence. It is reported that the company is engaged in construction AI agents were designed to work alongside employeesincluding designed for CEO Mark Zuckerberg and created one Zuckerberg chatbot for employees to communicate. Now workers are said to be training the systems that will actually replace them. It may be time to figure out how poison the well.
