Meta has removed a controversial feature that allowed users to alter photos from public Instagram accounts using artificial intelligence. The feature, which was introduced earlier this week along with several other AI tools, “missed the mark” and is no longer available, according to the company.
Earlier this week, Meta announced Muse Image is a new AI image generator created by Meta Superintelligence Labs, its dedicated AI division. Meta promoted a feature that allowed individuals to create images by @ tagging public Instagram accounts they wanted to reference. The feature, which was not intended to warn users if their photos were used in this way, caused an immediate backlash.

Now Meta has reversed course. Company a blog post On Friday, it announced that the feature had been removed. Puck News co-founder Dylan Byers was the first to share company decision.
“Our goal was to provide a useful creative tool and give people control over whether their public content is referenced in this way,” the company said on its blog. “We’ve heard feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available.”
