There is Microsoft confirmed Dell has blocked the availability of the latest Windows 11 July Patch Tuesday update (KB5101650) on Dell PCs after Dell reported unexpected shutdowns, overheating, poor performance and a number of issues caused by the preview update released before it.
KB5101650 was released on July 14 and includes a number of quality of life improvements and fixes. For most users, this update is fine, but Dell computers will notice that the update is not currently available for them.
“A limited number of Dell devices may show a yellow exclamation mark next to the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver in Device Manager. These devices can potentially experience unexpected shutdowns, poor performance, heat spikes, and battery drain.”
This issue applies to both update KB5101650, which was released on July 14, and optional preview update KB5095093, which was released on June 23, in Windows 11 version 24H2 or 25H2. Dell computers running any of these updates and experiencing problems should be recalled.
The bug in question appears to be caused by the new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface, with the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver no longer working as intended. “This issue was reported by Dell during testing and identified as an incompatibility between the Intel driver and the new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface.”
Microsoft says it is working on a fix and will soon release a resolution for computers affected by this problem. The good news is that Microsoft was immediately aware of the problem, as the July 14 update was immediately blocked on Dell computers.
Unfortunately, the additional update released on June 23 was not immediately blocked, meaning some devices may have installed the update that caused the problems. In this case, the best course of action is to roll back to the previous update.
