The 12-inch Surface Pro, previously Microsoft’s cheapest modern Surface PC, now starts at $1,049, down from $799. Originally launched for $999, the 13-inch Surface Pro flagship now starts at $1,499.
Microsoft blames memory prices for the increases, but that’s just one factor that makes the MacBook Neo look more attractive by the day.
There are still Chromebooks for much less than the Neo, but like our sister site 9 to 5 Google says budget prices may not be enough to protect them.
A large portion of the (consumer) Chromebook market is powered by cheap, accessible, but underpowered machines that ultimately leave a sour taste in the mouths of those who use them (…)
(In the education market) we won’t know for a while whether Apple can overcome the Chromebook monopoly in the sector, but if anyone can, it’s likely that Apple can succeed where Microsoft has fallen short in recent years.
If you’re already switching platforms to upgrade from a cheap Chromebook, then switching to a Mac over Windows seems more appealing.
As we’ve noted recently, Apple isn’t immune to RAM price hikes, but at least so far, the company isn’t responding to higher prices on its Mac lineup. On the contrary, it seems so removing more expensive configurations ahead of expected improvements.
