Microsoft has probably heard the complaints that not everyone wants AI in their daily meetings. An upcoming change will allow you to disable Copilot, Facilitator and meeting summary within Teams.
Before defeating AI features, only licensed meeting organizers will be able to enable or disable features.
Here is the planned timeline for the release of controls:
- Target Release: We will start rolling Early July 2026 (previously early June) and expect to complete Mid-July 2026 (previously mid-June).
- General Availability (Worldwide): We will start rolling Mid-July 2026 (previously mid-June) and expect to complete End of July 2026 (previously end of June).
Microsoft sent information about the changes via Microsoft 365 Message Center. If you are not an admin, you can read them Microsoft 365 Message Center Archive.
The change will affect all versions of Teams (desktop, web and mobile).
Meeting AI is a collection of features within Teams. It includes Copilot, Facilitator and Intelligent recap. Admins can disable all Meeting AI features with a single switch, or enable or disable tools individually.
While it’s easy to criticize the AI, and there are times to do so, these Teams features can be useful. A facilitator can provide information to automatically address knowledge gaps. Smart summary uses artificial intelligence to take notes, create summaries and highlight highlights.
But as with many AI features, people want the option to turn them off. The new options coming to Teams make this a lot easier for admins.
When used as a way to augment a person’s work, AI can increase productivity. But when humans rely on artificial intelligence, the quality deteriorates. Earlier this year, analyst Dennis Xu On Friday afternoon, he joked about banning the use of artificial intelligence.
Xu’s comments were checked for language, but the general feeling was that people would be too lazy to double-check jobs completed by AI tools on Friday afternoon.
Considering that even Microsoft researchers suggest AI chatbots get “dumb” the longer you talk to themIt makes sense to give meeting organizers simple links to disable AI in teams.
