Microsoft Surface week meant something. Fans and journalists gathered around the screens to watch the live stream or attend an in-person event where Microsoft unveiled the new hardware.
Things are completely different in 2026, and I wouldn’t blame you for missing new Surface hardware announcements entirely. Microsoft didn’t hold events or make announcements. Instead, the company sent the details to publications and published some blog posts.
This means we have a new Surface hardware, but no hype.

Podcast: How does pricing affect Microsoft’s new Surface PCs?
About this An episode of the Windows Central PodcastDaniel and Zac discuss Microsoft’s new Surface for Business announcements and their pricing.
For business, the Surface Laptop 8 is a beautiful laptop in a vacuum. We got 4/5 Surface Laptop 8 review for business thanks to the privacy screen, sharp display and powerful performance driven by the Intel Core Ultra 3 Series chip inside.
However, the Surface cannot be viewed in a vacuum. At a time when enthusiasts call the Surface brand “stagnant, overpriced, weak and dead” Microsoft can’t afford to just refresh its Surface Laptop and Surface Pro lines with new chips and a few upgrades.
I argued this last week on Windows Wrap Microsoft is rebuilding XBOX and Windows 11 while leaving the Surface to gather dust.
Earlier this year I mentioned Four steps to save the Surface brand. Let’s see how Microsoft did:
I understand that such changes will take time. Microsoft can’t design a new Surface that updates form factors overnight. But Microsoft has positive steps to take today.
Microsoft could announce Snapdragon X and Intel versions of Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices side by side. They’re meant for different types of customers, so it’s not like they can eat each other off.
Consumer-focused Surface devices are on the way. Microsoft plans to announce them later this year. They could just announce all new Surface devices and set launch dates. It wouldn’t be a perfect solution, but it would be better than what we got.
I have to say, I’m not a fan of Microsoft’s Surface PC launch these days. An online blog post aimed solely at business customers is absolutely NOT to generate hype for your line of equipment. We know that consumer options are around…May 19, 2026
Consumer Surface devices should also be more affordable than business versions. The announcement of the more affordable Surface Laptop 8, Surface Pro 12 and other computers will reduce some of the sticker shock caused by the Surface for Business devices.
Business computers have security features and extended support that drive up prices. Companies are also more willing to pay premiums and can get bulk discounts.
More affordable consumer Surface computers will be better received than a promise Surface Laptop with 8 GB of RAM.
Microsoft can at least claim to be excited about these devices. Blog posts and posting specs are far from happening on stage.
If I could send a message to Microsoft and its decision makers, it would be “take some pride in your work.” It’s pretty clear that’s not happening now.
Shopping with Sean
Until or unless Microsoft introduces a Surface device that I can recommend above the competition, I’ll leave the Surface out of my shopping recommendation here. The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x (Gen 11) It’s a thin, light, all-day machine Surface type should do to do
Even with the new Surface Laptop 8 for Business and Surface Pro 12 for Business, the Yoga Slim 7x remains the better choice. Perhaps that will change when Microsoft introduces its consumer-oriented Surface hardware, but we don’t know now because the company has decided to confuse its announcements.
Lenovo
Yoga Slim 7x (Gen 11)
The Snapdragon X2 Elite SoC pushes the Yoga Slim 7x (Gen 11) into “easy recommend” territory for those who don’t plan to play games or handle particularly heavy specialized workloads. Long battery life and excellent performance are notable advantages.
