Android Auto is one of the most convenient features in most modern cars, even if it’s somewhat underused. It’s just a scaled-down and limited version of Android, which makes most apps pretty useless. However, there are a few essential apps that you’ll really love to use, and I’m not talking about Google Maps or your favorite music player.
By default, though, most drivers use Google Maps countless solid alternatives. Then everyone has YouTube Music, Spotify or similar on their home screen. But actually Android Auto supports more apps than you might think. Here are a few lesser-known apps that I think are essential.

As we know, gas is quite expensive these days. Even when prices are flat and higher than ever, I’m always looking for the best gas deal.
Fuelio is an amazing app that maps nearby gas stations and their current prices. It’s great for emergencies when you realize you’re almost out of gas, but it’s also a great way to save a little money every week.
For example, I live in a pretty small town outside of Dallas, and prices can vary wildly depending on station location, time of day, and other factors. I always turn on Fuelio, check nearby gas stations, then choose the best option for my needs and save money. It’s usually about 10-20 cents less, but things add up over time.
For this reason alone, I consider it an essential app for Android Auto. Additionally, the software can help you track mileage, maintenance (such as oil changes), service or repair costs, and related expenses. Honestly, it’s pretty great.
Weather and Radar for Android Auto
Don’t forget about the solid weather program
Android Auto doesn’t have a built-in radar map, and weather data from your phone isn’t always very useful. This is especially true for anyone living in areas with hazardous weather conditions. If you encounter bad weather frequently, a solid radar program is essential. Great for road trips too.
The Weather and Radar software It’s the first fully integrated weather app for Android Auto that gives you hyper-local, real-time information, and I use it all the time. Yes, it will let you see live radar directly from the infotainment screen. However, I would recommend checking the radar when you are in the park and safe. The Drive Weather app is another solid option.
SpotHero makes parking easy

The only thing worse than sitting in traffic on your way to dinner or a sporting event is finding a parking spot once you get to your destination. it is there Spot Hero comes to save the day.
Think of SpotHero as Fuelio, but for parking. It works with a list of nearby parking spaces, including airports and garages. In addition, you can preview and select specific dates or arrival times and the app will find the best place to park for you.
Depending on the parking location, you can even reserve and pay for it before you arrive, which is quite helpful. It’s available in most major cities, works great with Android Auto, and I use it for every sporting event, concert, or date night downtown. Again, this is not the usual map, music or podcast app that everyone knows, but something more important to make life easier and driving easier.

Shortcuts, automation and more in your car
Honestly, most people don’t need (and shouldn’t want) a bunch of apps in their car. Get Waze, YouTube Music, Spotify and a few of the apps mentioned above and you’re all set. We all know quite a bit about the apps you need to use while driving a motor vehicle.
While there are all kinds of other apps that work with Android Auto, like GameSnacks or Zoom, third-party music programsPlugShare to find charging stations and more, one of the most important and overlooked aspects is Google’s built-in Assistant and Gemini.
You can do it before you leave the driveway automate all kinds of tasks Using shortcuts and Google Assistant. I have automations for certain voice commands that do multiple things with one command, smart home controls, or a text message that automatically sends to my wife when I pick up our kid. Honestly, this is the type of stuff you want to take advantage of.
Then, if voice commands in Android Auto annoy you, you can turn any voice command into a shortcut icon with one touch and put it on the home screen. So you’re not trying to talk to the screen and hope it calls or text the right person and just tap a button and keep driving safely with your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
Do more with Android Auto
As you can see, there are important apps for when you’re in the car, other than the usual maps, navigation and music controls. I use Fuelio weekly, I use SpotHero frequently, and the Weather and Radar app keeps me informed and safe on the go.
