TL; DR

  • Atlas Arcade and Animated Subtitles have recreated a Mario Kart-like experience on YouTube.
  • Creators were able to create an experience using YouTube’s 360-degree spherical video feature.
  • You can change your character by choosing different subtitles.

Even if you can’t Nintendo Switch 2you can still play mario kart, sort of. A pair of YouTube creators have put their brains together to bring a Mario Kart-like experience to the video streaming service.

In one of the more creative efforts on the platform, Atlas Arcade and Animated Subtitles You’ve put together an interactive fan-made YouTube video that lets you control Mario and your friends while driving on Rainbow Road. If you’re on your desktop, you’ll be able to turn left and right, avoiding obstacles in your path using keyboard controls. It’s a fairly scaled-down experience compared to the real thing, but it’s an interesting one all the same.

To accomplish this, the creators used YouTube’s 360-degree spherical video feature. This allows the user to change their view of the video. So the user can move left and right instead of being in a fixed place.

Another neat trick to note is the subtitle menu. The developers managed to turn the subtitle menu into a character selector. Depending on the subtitle you choose, you can be Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Wario, or even Bowser.

If you decide to give it a try, don’t expect a fully finished game. Being just a one-minute interactive video, it has its limitations. You can’t pick up items in this experience, and there are no opponents to race against. However, if you have nothing else to do, it serves as a nice little time-waster.
