NVIDIA explains why you can’t find Shield TV anywhere

NVIDIA may not have officially discontinued the $149 Shield TV, but there’s a good chance it won’t be back in stock. Follows reports a few days ago It is the main variant of NVIDIA Android TV out of stock at multiple retailers, the company responded to our request for comment on the matter.

In the email sent Android AuthorityNVIDIA clarified:

The base model SHIELD TV is largely sold out due to demand. We currently have no updates to share regarding future availability. SHIELD TV Pro remains available and the SHIELD platform continues to be supported with continuous updates for over 10 years.

While the statement doesn’t say that NVIDIA is discontinuing any of its Shield TV models, it does deny any guarantee that the basic Shield TV will ever be back in stock.

Of course, it’s possible that the base model of the Shield TV is unavailable simply because of high demand. However, NVIDIA’s silence on future availability doesn’t inspire confidence in the device’s future.

Combine that statement with the Shield Remote’s suddenly dropping prices and NVIDIA’s confirmation that the Shield TV Pro is available, and it looks like the company may be cutting the basic Shield TV from its lineup.

As we mentioned in our previous report on the mysterious disappearance of the Shield TV, NVIDIA may be discontinuing the device due to the rising cost of memory components. It could also simplify its offerings by cutting a device that doesn’t seem popular with customers, such as a more powerful “Pro” variant.

If you’ve been waiting for the Shield TV to come back into stock, you might get lucky and actually find it, but we wouldn’t hold our breath. The Shield TV Pro is likely the way forward when it comes to NVIDIA’s plans for Android TV devices.
