One Last Kill Is Solid, But A Little Confused

The long-awaited, long-awaited The Marvel One-Shot of The Punisher is finally here, and while it works as an intense, action-packed introduction to the character, we’re a little confused about its overall purpose.

titled Punisher: One last killshow (less than an hour long) Jon Bernthal as Frank Castleaka Punisher dealing with some major issues. At some point in the past, his wife and children were killed by a mafia family, and he went on a revenge killing spree. Now, she still struggles with their loss, but is forced to put it aside in order to survive a complicated attempt on her life. There’s action and violence, as well as a dynamic, powerful performance from Bernthal.

release of One last kill comes on their heels Daredevil: Reborn second season. In the first season, Bernthal’s Punisher was reintroduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he was nowhere to be seen in the second season. His persona plays a part, as the Kingpin’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force uses his symbol, but nothing in terms of his story.

So, given its release date, it can be assumed One last kill Frank explains where his Castle is Born Again season two, right? Not really. Maybe tangentially, but not directly. Well, it’s ready it appears this summer Spider-Man: The New Day. Does this explain how the team came about? Still not. So you might be scratching your head a little while watching the show. What does this mean?

Without a doubt, the show is a concise and visceral refresher of Frank Castle’s origin. It’s likely that many MCU fans haven’t seen Netflix’s two seasons punitive, which covers this lot in more detail. So if you haven’t seen it and need a quick refresher on who the Punisher is and what he does, One last kill is the way to go. He is an ex-marine seeking revenge against a mafia family for the death of his own family. As in the show and as in the original Marvel Comics.

And considering the show isn’t even an hour long, One last kill It does a fantastic job of getting into Frank’s headspace quickly and effectively. Reinaldo Marcus Greene (co-wrote with Bernthal) uses all sorts of filmmaking techniques to show the audience the pain Frank is going through. He has apparitions, suicidal thoughts, ignores the horrors around him, etc. We can clearly see who this man is, what struggles he has.

Then it goes a step further when Frank realizes that his actions have consequences, and basically the entire New York neighborhood is trying to kill him. The result is 15 minutes (or more) of non-stop action sequences with some of the most violent and gruesome murders you’ll ever see on a Disney property. We are talking about very rough things. Not for the heartless kind of violence. If you can stomach that sort of thing, it’s entertaining as well as showing who both Frank and the Punisher are. Finally, he has to make a major decision, setting things up for the future.

until the end One last killyou got it. The point is to refresh the fans. Those who are either excited to see the character again, or who know nothing about The Punisher in particular, have never read the comics or seen an episode of the show or the first season of the series. Daredevil: Reborn. It’s a quick origin story and it does it well. Still, it’s hard to shake the fact that the whole thing feels a bit redundant and tonally removed from these other MCU Punisher stories. We don’t think he’s going to rip someone’s arms off or stab people repeatedly. Spider man movie, huh? The show has a middle ground that stays true to character, not to the world.

And so we’re left with a solid little story that feels completely disconnected from its surroundings. On the one hand, this is a good thing. The Punisher is a brutal character with a lot of important real-life mythology around him. It should not be sugar coated. And watching it as a bridge between shows and movies about masked Marvel heroes on Disney+ just feels bad. It’s valuable and in character, but it’s not all there.

Punisher: One last kill streaming now. The character will appear later Spider-Man: The New Day On July 31.
