OpenAI released an official statement in response to Apple’s lawsuit accusing the company of stealing trade secrets. Read below.
OpenAI denies Apple’s claims
early today Apple sued the company alleging “trade secret misappropriation and breach of contract” against former employees Chang Liu and Tang Tan, as well as OpenAI and io Products.
In the filing, Apple accuses former employees of stealing confidential hardware data and using it to advance OpenAI’s fledgling consumer hardware efforts.
The company details what it describes as “an example of the theft of Apple’s trade secrets by OpenAI employees formerly at Apple,” adding that “such wrongdoing has been normalized and exemplified by management.”
Apple alleges that in addition to gaining unauthorized access to its systems and confidential files, the defendants encouraged job candidates to bring Apple prototypes and components to interviews, reveal details about unreleased products and manufacturing processes, and help OpenAI approach Apple suppliers using proprietary information.

Following Apple’s appeal, Drew Pusateri, OpenAI’s Director of Strategic Communications, It led to X to comment on behalf of the company.
He claimed in his post that OpenAI has “no interest in other companies’ trade secrets,” adding that OpenAI is “focused on building innovative technology that enables people everywhere.”
This isn’t the first time OpenAI’s hardware efforts with Jony Ive-led io Products have been embroiled in a trade secret dispute.
Initialization of iyO hardware Sued OpenAI and io Products on their brand shortly after the partnership was announced In March 2026, he amended his complaint adding trade secret misappropriation claims.
The amended lawsuit also names Tang Tan as a defendant, who alleges that the former iyO engineer downloaded confidential files and provided them to a former Apple executive. OpenAI also disputed iyO’s claims.
