TL;DR

Roblox launched Build, a mobile-first AI creation token that creates games from text prompts, starting with an alpha in New Zealand on July 28.

Roblox announced Build Wednesday, A new creation icon in the Roblox mobile app that allows anyone to turn a text request into a basic playable game without touching Roblox Studio or writing a line of code. A creator can describe something like a relaxed forest adventure game with environmental obstacles, and Build will create a starting point with game mechanics, environment, characters, sound and visual style. The feature begins public alpha testing in New Zealand on July 28 for users aged nine and over.

Build shares a backend with Roblox Studio, meaning creators can start a project on their phone and continue improving it on their desktop with the full Studio toolset, or run agents from Studio and check progress from a mobile device. The system is powered by a mix of open source and proprietary Roblox AI models. The company whose foundational model is Roblox’s Cube earlier this year, the agent was introduced along with Studio toolscreates ready-to-play objects that can control, draw, or behave as expected without manual scripting.

Roblox said it is aware of the quality risk that comes with lowering the barrier to game creation. The company said its discovery system ranks games by long-term retention rate, not by recency or volume, and games played by anyone won’t appear on the homepage regardless of how they were made. Games published from Build will go through the same safety checks and save-based discovery ranking as all other Roblox titles, and games aimed at younger players will undergo extensive review before being added to the Roblox Kids or Select catalogs.

Along with Build, Roblox is shipping an agent toolkit for professional creators in the coming months. These include a game testing agent that finds bugs before players encounter them, an analytics agent that answers questions about game performance in plain language, and an experimentation agent that defines tests to improve engagement and monetization. A new scene creation model that will generate entire editable and playable 3D environments from a single text query is also in development.

It comes as an announcement AI-generated content is flooding platforms faster than review systems can handleA dynamic that has led to an 84 percent increase in App Store submissions and prompted Apple to crack down on apps built with low-quality AI. Roblox is betting that its save-based discovery system will serve as a natural quality filter that uncovers only the games that players actually want to keep playing.

The basic version of the installation will be free and there will be paid options for power users. The rollout will roll out to more regions after the New Zealand alpha, and Roblox said it plans to share additional creation tool announcements in the coming months. The platform has 132 million daily active users, each of whom can now create a game prototype from their phone.
