On supported devices, the feature measures heart rate as well as systolic and diastolic blood pressure using the watch’s internal optical sensors.
Before you get too excited and give up on a medical-grade BP monitor, there’s an important caveat. Samsung’s system estimates blood pressure indirectly using pulse wave analysis, while traditional cuff-based monitors measure it directly by detecting the pressure in your arteries.
That’s why Samsung requires you to calibrate the feature every 28 days using a standard blood pressure cuff to maintain accuracy.
You also need the Samsung Health Monitor app to measure and track your blood pressure.
Blood pressure tracking isn’t new to Samsung’s wearables. The company has been offering this feature in select markets for years Galaxy Watch Active 2introduced it in 2020.
US implementation is likely due to regulatory hurdles. While Samsung has secured FDA clearance for features like Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications and Sleep Apnea detection, it hasn’t confirmed whether blood pressure monitoring has received similar approval.
Samsung says the feature will start rolling out to US users in stages starting today.
