Samsung says its new Android XR smart glasses, which it is developing with Google, will have a battery life of 9 hours on a single charge.
Towards the end of Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked presentation Galaxy Z Fold 8 and in the Flip 8 series, the company announced several key features for the Android XR glasses it is working on. We’ve seen a few leaks so far, but Samsung is getting comfortable enough with its progress to start pulling back the curtain a little more.
Samsung’s Android XR glasses will have a 9-hour battery to run throughout the day. In this case, life expectancy increases significantly. Samsung says the case can charge the glasses “more than 7 times”.
Pre-release estimates are always a bit generous, but 9 hours of battery seems like a decent place to start. Meta’s display smart glasses are rated for up to 6 hours before needing a charge. But Samsung’s first pair won’t have a screen built into the lens(es).
In the case of the Samsung Spectacle Case, that means having extra battery power means disconnecting the case from the charger at night or on the go. It’s hard to imagine that this job will last users a full week with a maximum of 9 hours. After the death of smart glasses, refilling them means losing 20/20 vision for glasses wearers.
We also got a few more pictures of the glasses during the launch. Close-ups showed minor features like the hinge design and the arm-mounted privacy mode switch. It repeated how the pictures were taken – using the shutter button on the arm – but added more context to how those pictures were saved.
Samsung says that photos taken with the glasses will appear in a special app. Copied text and other visual data can be sent to Samsung Notes on phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. We can assume that Samsung Notes is only one option among Google applications. Samsung has also upgraded its Galaxy Watch lineup, adding that the wearables can take pictures and answer calls.
Other than the battery and information, nothing has been revealed from Samsung, including when the Android XR glasses will be available. We already knew that Samsung’s Android XR glasses would be released “this coming fall.”
