Someone has created a fully functional Catan clone that runs entirely on your terminal

Summary

  • Play Settlers of El Poblador, a Catan clone, right on your Linux terminal as a text-based game.

  • Install from source or release; requires Go to escape.

  • No bots or online games yet; local players only for now; online support is being worked on.

Sometimes you want to play Settlers of Catan without playing against other people. You’re just not in the mood to be the one who has to choose where the Thief goes, while other players give you a death glare, no matter how good the game is, even if you think about placing it on their resource. Fortunately, for those of us who cave easily, you can now play a Settlers of Catan clone on your Linux terminal, because the FOSS developers won’t stop until you can do everything you can imagine on the command line.

El Poblador brings the strategy game to text-based form

It is also quite easy to install

Runs Tmux and several programs in a Linux terminal

As seen OmgUbuntusomeone released a clone called Settlers of Catan Villager. If you’ve never heard of Catan before, it’s a classic board game where you must climb an island, use land resources, and build roads while preventing your opponents from doing the same. You can also trade resources with other people if they are a game.

El Poblador brings that game to the Linux terminal and you can download it release the build or from source. You have to catch it Go you can type “go run main.go new” to run the game and after installation (player4)” to add people. There are no bot players, nor the ability to play online, but the developer says they are working on the latter pain point, so watch their space.
