Here’s the bad news. Spaceballs: New It’s not coming at us at a ridiculous speed. The sequel won’t be in theaters until April 23, 2027, but the cast and crew still decided this week that at San Diego Comic-ConIt was time to get rolling on the hype train. And we are amazed.
After a hilarious video introduction by Mel Brooks himself, the panel began with an introduction to the cast, except for one key person: Rick Moranis. Everyone wondered where he was, so they decided to comb the audience. Space balls actors with big combs then walked the halls of Hall H to find people in Dark Helmet masks. And finally, one was Rick Moranis. Moranis took the stage to thunderous applause and even chants of “Rick, Rick, Rick.” This is his first comic-con.
Moderator Kevin Smith asked producer and star Josh Gad how it all came about. Apparently, Gad cold-called Brooks and his team, launching into a 40-minute pitch that Brooks barely understood. But he loved it. Basically, Gad’s point was that science fiction and filmmaking in general have changed a lot in the last 40 years. Space balls it was the perfect vehicle to catch everyone.
Moranis said he’s been asked about a sequel for years, and the script and idea came at the perfect time for him. He called his decision to do so one of the best he’s ever made. We then saw footage of Brooks director Josh Greenbaum first reuniting with Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga, as well as Rick Moranis. Both were very emotional as they all keep in touch but haven’t seen each other in decades.
Brooks returns as Yogurt in the film, but at 100 years old, he couldn’t actually be on set. So it turned out that his lines were filmed in the studio and his face was filmed for the action. At first she had dots, but the dots bothered her, so they took them off.
Bill Pullman couldn’t be in San Diego because he’s filming something else, but he sent a letter. Finally, his son Lewis, who was emotional as he talked about working with his father on a business, read the letter. Which he did not remember at all. It was very funny.
Keke Palmer wouldn’t say anything about her character, Destiny, but she loved playing her and found the script incredibly funny. Gad also wouldn’t say who he’s playing, but he’s actually playing another Mawg, not Barfda. He called the film essentially a love letter to John Cundy and some of the other cast members who have passed along the way.
In perhaps the best moment of the panel, the team revealed that Spaceballs will be the first film in the cinematic universe called The Mighty Schwarz Saga, also known as ASS. They even revealed their plans for ASS with a huge selection of screens that went by so fast, we couldn’t catch them all. But here are a few:

The panel finally ended with some teaser footage that was very close to what was played at CinemaCon. You can read more about it herebut it seems there are a few new scenes (or ones I didn’t notice a few months ago). Yogurt is in Carbonite and is called “Frozen Yogurt.” Dark Helmet fights Yogurt with claw-like lightsabers. have”Space balls: Exercise Ball.” Destiny fights the Flame Thrower. There’s a scene where the white-haired characters all blend together, ala Game of Thrones. We see child versions of the characters fall from the sky. The Dark Helmet presses the “Restart” button, and we get a dull scene mixing Destiny and Lewis Pullman’s characters with the VHS scene from the original film. Ended with later Avatar Joke from CinemaCon footage.
Starring Rick Moranis, Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, Anthony Carrigan, George Wyner, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman and Mel Brooks. Spaceballs: New Opens on April 23, 2027. Here’s the official plot description:
Anyway, the Dark Helmet is back! 40 years after the events of the first Spaceballs, 50 years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, and one year after the events of The Devil Wears Prada 2, the galaxy is once again under threat. A menace so evil, unstoppable, utterly devoid of any original ideas, that it has vowed to bring back the past… every last bit of it.
With Lone Starr in hiding, Queen Vespa on the throne, and Schwartz stretched thinner than a franchise theatrically releasing television episodes, the only hope for the galaxy is Vespa’s unruly son, Princess Starburst, and a mysterious Palace advisor named Destiny. Together, they must find Lone Starr, Yogurt, and any other iconic legacy characters fans have been clamoring for, so while you can fight some threats, a reboot isn’t one of them.
