I stopped checking Marathon’s Steam charts A week after release, not because I want to see the game fail or anything, but because I’m caught up in all the internet drama surrounding it. I’ve played the game myself and to be honest I didn’t like it so I was curious to see how long it would last. Well, thanks now we have some numbers Sony‘s earnings report last night.
For those who don’t know, PlayStation bought Bungie in 2022 for more than $3.6 billion As part of Sony’s infamous, and now largely failed, live service gaming push. This strategy gave us Games like Concordalong with many canceled projects after the initiative, it failed to produce the results Sony had hoped for.
As Xbox fans know all too well, Bungie was once closely associated with the Xbox thanks to the Halo franchise, which many, myself included, still consider one of the greatest trilogies of all time. At the time, it probably made perfect sense for Sony to buy Bungie. The studio had already moved on from Halo and had great success with Destiny, proving it could build and maintain a large live service audience.
Let me say that to make things clear, there is an impairment loss no Bungie itself lost $565 million directly. Rather, it means that Sony believes that Bungie is now cheaper than when the company was first purchased.
With that in mind, it still naturally raises questions about Bungie’s future, especially Destiny and Marathon. Bungie recently stated that it has multi-year plans for Marathon, but with numbers like these, it’s increasingly hard to imagine the studio, and potentially even its current games, being healthy in a few years.
It’s a sad day for Bungie and a worrying time for the studio’s future. With that in mind, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you have specific thoughts on this situation or were you waiting for it?
