- T-Mobile says it’s shutting down its 2G network on August 3, and anyone with devices using that network should upgrade to newer phones.
- An interview with T-Mobile’s chief network officer, Ankur Kapur, revealed that T-Mobile held onto 2G for so long so as not to let go of customers who relied on it in hindsight.

T-Mobile is making changes to its network. This overrides some old networking technology and is probably for the best.
Company announced announces in its Network Evolution magazine that it is preparing to discontinue the 2G GSM network. T-Mobile says its legacy 2G network will shut down on August 3, 2026. As 2G prepares to go, T-Mobile is reminding customers that anyone still using this older technology will lose “fixed dial numbers via call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID or device settings” on Android and iOS.
Especially for Android, you will have the problem of “sending large multimedia messages such as pictures or videos”.
While it may seem strange that T-Mobile is still maintaining its 2G network, given that Evolution magazine is decommissioning 3G (CDMA) in July 2022, an interview. Violent Network shed some light on this. Ankur Kapur, T-Mobile’s chief network officer, told the publication that he didn’t want to “put a bunch of customers in a difficult situation.” What’s more, Kapoor tells Fierce Network that he’s observed many people entering the US with devices that don’t have VoLTE enabled.
But now T-Mobile has gotten to the point where customers won’t lose anything by turning off 2G. Kapoor said customers have been notified and anyone still using an older device with 2G has “ample time” to upgrade to newer phones with 5G.
The network is evolving
Android Central’s Take
I’m sure it still is someone It uses 2G, right? After all, it’s a big blue world we live in. A quick Google search will tell you how much of a security risk 2G is compared to the current standard. In a way, T-Mobile is doing us a favor.
As we mentioned, T-Mobile Close the 3G (CDMA) network in 2022, but knocked out the Sprint version first. The announcement came a few months early in 2021, as T-Mobile gave users four months until January 1, 2022 to grab the new devices. Shortly after, he announced that Sprint would shut down its LTE network on June 30, 2022.
Surprisingly, T-Mobile has said it will phase out its 2G and 3G networks in 2021; but the former leaves us only now, years later.
And let’s not forget that T-Mobile is wrapping up its free month with this a pretty unique $60 jersey for customers. The latest Member of the Month prize is a limited-edition Umbro football shirt, which customers can purchase through the T-Life app from July 7.
