The 'Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra' has the potential to be a cruel joke

There are actual reasons to be excited about Samsung’s upcoming foldable devices, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra isn’t just disappointing, it has strong enough potential to make a bit of a cruel joke.

I own a Galaxy Z Fold 7. I paid for Samsung’s foldable device last year because it really is one indeed can fold well. Now there are other great options out there, like Motorola’s new Razr Fold, which I just reviewed, and I’m still on the Fold 7. am Although worried and confused, quite excited about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series.

As repeated leaks suggest, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will be split into two — a new wider form factor dubbed the “Galaxy Z Fold 8” and a slightly improved version of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which will be marketed as the “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.” Aside from the simple fact that the Ultra is no match for the Samsung foldable in any capacity, I’m very concerned about the impact this might have.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will debut as a device that is effectively an upgraded Galaxy Z Fold 7. same designsame form factor, same cameras and really only some upgrades screen crease and a delayed battery capacity increase. Again, the “Ultra” moniker here borders on comical inaccuracy, but that’s not my concern.

What bothers me is the price. If the current leaks are accurate, there is almost no chance of Samsung selling these two smartphones at the same price. The branding suggests a situation where the Fold 8 will cost the same as the Fold 7 – $1,999 or more – with the “Ultra” being more expensive. But with what we know about this “Ultra” device, there’s nothing to justify the price hike – except for that RAMaggedonof course. Market conditions are already threatening to drive up the price of Samsung’s next foldable model somehow being able to make this new wider device a more budget option, I just don’t see how we’ll end up with a lineup that makes any sense.

It would be incredibly disappointing to effectively drop a redesigned foldable like the more expensive “Ultra” while putting an all-new form factor on last year’s price tag.

However, that is exactly where we are. Smartphone manufacturers are currently standing in a cornerbut Samsung also put itself in this position with this alleged branding. Hopefully the Ultra won’t see the light of day and Samsung can release two smartphones that let consumers choose their priorities regardless of price.
