The Google Phone app on Wear OS gets the M3 Expressive design

Apart from updates Contact softwareThe Phone by Google has significantly gotten Material 3 Expressive design in Wear OS.

Previously, the home page of the Phone app on Wear OS was a list to access Favorites, Recents, Contacts, Dialpad, and Voicemail. This was from the early days of Wear OS, if not Android Wear.

Old

Google Phone now opens to the Recents feed with every card using Dynamic Color. The two large buttons at the top give you access to contacts and caller ID.

Dialpad benefits from Material 3 expression containers and themes, allowing you to enter *, # and + as before by swiping down.

This is a much needed modernization. We noticed this change today after updating to Wear OS 7, but it’s also present in Wear OS 6, version 165 of the Phone by Google app.

New

At the same time, the Contacts app has also been updated, noting this particular change in the Wear OS 7 changelog for the Google Pixel Watch.

Next to search is a new option to add contacts to your wrist. Google now shows keyboard and voice search buttons when you tap the magnifying glass.

Contact pages have been updated to “additionally use Material3 elements in new layouts to display the Contact List and Card in a new way”. A contact picture is displayed on the left with buttons to quickly call or send them a message.

There is also a “new layout for favorite contacts in the contact list”. This grid is available if your device has a larger screen (45mm vs. 41mm on the Pixel Watch).
