Halo: The campaign has evolved released next month July 28, 2026and it’s trying to establish itself as one of the most replayable Halo games ever. Between 42 skulls and the new Campaign Remix mode, which act as game changers It randomizes skulls so that every game feels different, with Halo Studios clearly leaning towards replayability.
While I think these additions are great, it feels like some of the core features of the Halo franchise have fallen by the wayside. I have to admit, I was a little annoyed that I didn’t see them coming back.
A visual masterpiece that will fall short
First of all thanks @gruntdotapi on X (formerly Twitter)first brought this to my attention, but apparently Halo Studios released a Q&A ahead of the game’s release, and boy, there’s a lot on it. First, we know this now Campaign Evolved will not feature a Picture Mode or a Theater Mode. Considering how good the game looks, that’s a huge shame.
The game is built on a modified Halo: Reach engine, with Unreal Engine 5 layered on top, so it’s hard not to wonder why work hasn’t been put into supporting features that have helped define the Halo community for years. Theater mode, cars, screenshots, file sharing, and community creativity all played a big role in making Halo what it is today.
This is another disappointment customized customization options will not appear during cutscenes. Considering the game has custom skins, it feels like a missed opportunity to let players see their own Spartans reflected throughout the campaign experience.
Players also shouldn’t wait for a public demo before getting startedbased on questions and answers. While not every Halo game offers one, it’s still unfortunate for fans hoping to get some hands-on time before release.
A replay puzzle
However, what disappoints me the most is that Halo: The Evolving Campaign is built around replayability, but as far as we can tell, it seems to have lost one of the most iconic replayability features in Halo: The Master Chief Collection. At least based on what we’ve seen so far, there are no campaign scores, campaign time, or associated leaderboards.
For a game that encourages players to replay missions with different skull combinations and modifiers, this feels like a significant omission. Having global leaderboards where players can compare scores, compete for fastest finish times and compete against each other would add another layer of long-term engagement.
One and done: no support after launch?
unfortunately in the aforementioned Halo Waypoint Q&AHalo Studios also confirmed that Halo: Campaign Evolved is a one-and-done game and that players shouldn’t expect content additions after launch; honestly, it’s just bad. By the way, it feels like Halo: The Campaign Evolved is missing a few of the franchise’s most beloved community and replayability features, and I’m pissed.
What do you think? Is this a massive missed opportunity for Campaign Evolved, or do you just not think it matters? Let me know in the comments and don’t forget to take our poll!
