Just days after rumors about the thickness of the iPhone 18 Pro Max started circulating again, a new report suggests that Apple’s next flagship could also be the heaviest iPhone in years. Here are the details.
Bigger battery, heavier body
“Fixed Focus Digital” leaked Weibo a few days ago doubled according to his previous claim, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be about 2 mm thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which measures 8.75 mm thick and reaches 13.18 mm in the thickest camera area.
After that, a Macworld The report claims that the battery capacity of the iPhone 18 Pro Max will reach 5,425 mAh in the eSIM model and 5,235 mAh in the version with a physical SIM tray. A few days later, regulatory documents pointed to slightly different numbers: 5,567 mAh for the US/eSIM-only model and 5,391 mAh for the Chinese model with a physical SIM tray.
For information, the battery of iPhone 17 Pro Max has a capacity of 5088 mAh in models with eSIM only, and 4823 mAh in the Chinese model with a physical SIM tray. In practice, this means that the rumored iPhone 18 Pro Max will represent a significant leap either way.
Now, the Weibo leaker Ice Universe (via MacRumors) shared additional information on what to expect from the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s tech specs: weight considering the large battery.
From his Weibo posts (translation is ours):
“iPhone 18 Pro Max’s 5,500mAh battery comes at the price of a 240g body and 9mm thick chassis.”
At 240 grams, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be Apple’s heaviest iPhone in years, matching the 240-gram iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Since then, Apple has kept its largest iPhone models below that, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max weighing 221 grams, the iPhone 16 Pro Max weighing 227 grams, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max weighing 233 grams.
Apple’s material changes also help explain the Pro Max’s recent weight changes. The iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max used stainless steel, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro Max switched to titanium, and last year’s iPhone 17 Pro Max switched to aluminum.
Current rumors suggest that Apple will stick with aluminum for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which raises the possibility that the weight increase will come from internal changes, including a larger battery and a thicker design.
